A Flamboyant New Arrival at Paradise Park!

There’s a flutter of excitement at Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary this July — a Caribbean flamingo chick has hatched for the first time in five years! Staff at the sanctuary are over the moon as the tiny new arrival settles into life on its nest under the watchful eyes of proud parents, Edwina and Anthony.

This little chick marks a big milestone, being the first of its kind to hatch naturally and be reared by its parents at the Park. You might remember their last chick, Derek, who was hand-reared in 2019 — and now it looks like he has a sibling!

Although it’s still early days, keepers report that the chick is healthy and being carefully looked after. In the first week, it will mostly stay snuggled in the nest, growing stronger and finding its (slightly wobbly) feet. Within a few weeks, the chick will start to explore its surroundings — initially grey in colour, it will begin to show hints of pink after a few months. That famous flamingo pink comes from carotenoid pigments in their food, and the full transformation takes around two years.

Flamingo 5

Edwina and Anthony, both 23 years old, arrived at Paradise Park in 2004 after being bred at Chester Zoo. They’re part of a charming flamingo flock that includes Derek, Doris, Alan, Colin, Richard, Rita, and Penelope. These social birds build their mud nests in shallow lagoons and form strong pair bonds. Flamingos usually lay just one egg, and both parents share the job of feeding the chick with a nutrient-rich ‘crop milk.’

While this chick is a cause for celebration, not all the flock were as lucky this season. Penelope and her mate Colin were first to lay an egg, but sadly it wasn’t viable. However, hopes are high that they’ll have better luck in the future.

Paradise Park is open daily from 10am — a perfect family day out where you can meet the flamingo family in person and even check in on them via the Park’s flamingo webcam HERE

Whether you’re a local or a visitor to St Ives, don’t miss the chance to see this delightful new addition to the flock — it’s a heart warming sight that’s sure to make you smile!
