Sharon McSwiney – Jewellery & Metalwork
- Overview
Inspired by Cornwall
The Cornish coast is a constant source of inspiration especially living & working in St Ives where the light is particularly special. Each day giving unique colours.
Jewellery & metalwork pieces evoking the colours & textures of these surroundings.
Sterling silver jewellery & metal wall art in copper & brass.
Texture & surface pattern are my passion. I combine copper & brass to create colour contrasts then utilise etching, embossing & hammering to create unique surfaces. Heat & fluxes are applied for further decorative effects.
I endeavour to do a daily sketch as I feel the need to create something every day. I regularly take part in month long projects such as mark making, pattern or colour prompts to develop new ideas. Some of these projects will evolve into metalwork or paintings.
I am finding working with paint really exciting & feel this element of my practice will develop further. Metalwork is obviously a restricted palette of colours so the possibilities of paint really inspire me. After 30 years of making I am looking to move into a slightly different direction & I am certain that concentrating on painting will also become a tool for designing & creating my metalwork & work in its own right.
We have three outlets for my work in St Ives, our own retail space on Island Square, I’m a member of Back Road Artworks & exhibit regularly at the St Ives Arts Club. I also exhibit with the Cornwall Crafts Association at Trelissick.
